Moderate hike: This out-and-back hike sponsored by Friends of Shenandoah Mountain will explore the North River Gorge in the 90,000-acre Proposed Shenandoah Mountain National Scenic Area in the George Washington National Forest.

Farm Tour: Join us on a Shenandoah Valley farm (TBD) to learn about implementation of BMPs and how conservation easement tax incentives can fund further conservation. This will be a “boots on the ground” tour in which we’ll look at the practices and outcomes, both fiscal and natural. We’re working with several farmers to determine the exact details, which will be posted at a later date.

Battlefield Stop & Drive Tour: The Shenandoah Valley is a remarkable Civil War travel destination, where you can journey back in time at historic sites, battlefields, and Civil War tours and events. This guided tour, using a car-caravan system, will cover the events and sites of these two battles while expanding on efforts to protect the region’s historic sites and landscape.

Walking tour: Join a walking tour to see downtown Harrisonburg’s revitalization and restoration efforts. Sites include Newtown, a historic African American community, the Thomas Harrison house built in 1750 by the namesake of the city and the Chesapeake Western Depot building.

Moderate hike: Managing lands for public access can be a challenge. Visitor safety, resource protection, vandalism, interpretation, and carrying capacity are just a few of the many factors that must be managed for a successful public lands program. We’ll be discussing these issues and more on a 2.5 hour hike in Shenandoah National Park.

Bike/Scooter: Cyclists of all levels, enjoy a 6.5 mile urban bike tour, led by Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition’s Executive Director Kyle Lawrence. Take a look at the completed phase one of the Northend Greenway (0.6 miles), a shared use path envisioned to ultimately provide connectivity from Downtown Harrisonburg to Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, to residential neighborhoods, community centers, and more.

Details: Northend Greenway Bike Trip
Walking Tour: In 2008, Valley Conservation Council, The Nature Conservancy, and the City of Harrisonburg embarked on a collaboration to restore the banks of Black’s Run to a more natural state. Passing through Purcell Park in downtown Harrisonburg, this stretch of river has seen impressive improvement since the project began, and active management of the restoration project continues to this day.
