Aldo Leopold: Join the Conversation: Land, People, and Community
“There are two things that interest me. The relationship of people to each other and the relationship of people to land.” — Aldo Leopold
This year (2018) marks the 70th anniversary of Aldo Leopold’s death and completion of A Sand County Almanac. In recognition of this milestone, Virginia’s United Land Trusts (VaULT) in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Forestry, the Aldo Leopold Foundation, and local land trusts initiated a series of programs across the Commonwealth, bringing together community leaders and citizens to revisit Leopold’s ideal of weaving a land ethic into the fabric of both our land and society.
Conversations About Land, People, and Community: A Sand County Almanac Revisited will seek to demonstrate how the enduring relevance of Leopold’s message can bring people together to discuss personal and communal land use choices, why we should care, and how a land ethic evolves in a thinking community.
That land is a community is the basic concept of ecology; but that land is to be loved and respected is an extension of ethics. That land yields a cultural harvest is a fact long known but latterly forgotten. — Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac
