Students Explore Conserved Property
New River Land Trust’s Youth Outreach program took fourth graders from Harding Avenue Elementary School to explore and study a local conserved property, the Obenshain Easement. Students rotated through three different experiences: assessing stream quality, creating sketch maps and stories of the land, and becoming “water investigators”. The students learned about our community, from how to keep our water clean to stories from the rich cultural heritage of this area.
Many thanks to Virginia Master Naturalists Shannon and Jean, Millstone Preservationist Jimmie Price, and Town of Blacksburg Stormwater Engineer Kafi Howard. We are also grateful to the Sunnyside Pentacostal Holiness Church for the use of their facilities on the rainy day of the trip.
