Youth Stream Trips Provide Hands-on Learning
What did you want to be when you grew up? This year, the New River Land Trust’s Youth Outreach program arranged for the fourth graders from Kipps, Harding Avenue and Margaret Beeks Elementary Schools to visit our conservation easements, where they had the opportunity to practice as scientists, historians and adventurers. They participated in unique field experiences exploring streams, learning local history and evaluating water quality, thanks to support from the Town of Blacksburg. The field trips provided real-world activities to go with the lessons learned in the classroom. Next year we hope to repeat our Stream Trips with all five elementary schools in Blacksburg, reaching every fourth grader in the 2018-19 academic year.
The career paths the children will choose in the future are far from decided, but we hope they carry with them a special appreciation for the land and water throughout their academic years and beyond.
